On the couch! with Mo & Grazz

Kindred souls from opposite poles. A shared melody set to different rhythms. Two loves – music, and each other. Music brought Philadelphia-bred songstress Monique Harcum and Belgian turntable pioneer DJ Grazzhoppa together in more ways than one – first as friends, then as husband and wife, and now as the duo known as Mo & Grazz, flexing a unique sound that fuses hip-hop,funk, jazz, gospel and classic r&b, to create a sound that goes beyond any musical genre.

Mo started out her career in the States as a dancer, and was featured in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X biopic before touring with the European adaptation of the Broadway hit musicals Little Shop Of Horrors and Hair. Mo has also toured with Grammy Award winning R&B artist Jill Scott and can be heard on the live album Experience Jill Scott+360.

Grazz is the 1991 European DMC Champion and the bronze medalist in the 1998 ITF World DJ Championships. An accomplished producer as well as a deejay, he has worked on mediums from the theater to the studio with talents like De Puta Madre, Omni, Cage, MF DOOM, Blade, Greedy-Fingers and AKA Moon to name a few. Considered by some to be the godfather of Belgian hiphop, Grazz has released over 100 records on vinyl and CD.

Mo was touring the U.S. in 2003 as a background singer for the Afropean R&B duo Les Nubians when they shared a bill with the globally respected Zap Mama, who Grazz was deejaying for at the time. Nature took its course, and only a year later Grazz had created DJ Grazzhoppa’s DJ Bigband, a turntable extravaganza featuring 12 deejays, saxophone player Fabizio Cassol, and Mo on vocals. On January 27 2005 they broke a well-established record by being the only hip-hop group ever to play before a sold-out crowd at the famed La Monnaie/ De Munt opera house in Brussels. All the while, Mo & Grazz were busy perfecting what has come to be their trademark sound: a fusion of gospel, hard-hitting hip-hop grooves and infectious vocal melodies.

In 2006 Mo &Grazz released their debut album Falling Upon Def Ears. A ferocious live act, they routinely switch between an eight-piece band and good ol’ two-turntables-and-a-microphone. They have been the supporting act for acts like Angie Stone, Roots Manuva and Guru of Jazzmatazz. In 2007 they had the honor of opening for ‘70s soul legends Sly & The Family Stone at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Gent, Belgium. Mo & Grazz are currently touring as the Bigband with their latest creation Gemini.

Meanwhile we dragged them onto our couch to have a nice chat with this fantastic duo.

On the couch! with Mathijs Bertel | Ansatz Der Maschine

Ansatz der Maschine is the indietronica project of soundtech Mathijs Bertel. He samples and distorts acoustic sounds to create fascinating beats and fairly-like melodies. Live on stage with a brilliant four piece.

October 2004: The band released their first EP, called “hide for the beast”(independent). The innovating tracks got them to win the CJP-contest "Het jong 2004", designed to give young artists some promotion (and a cash price of 5000 euro). The media attention this generated resulted in a bunch of live shows. Ansatz der Maschine also joined the belgian elctronica collective "Je m'en fish".

December 2006, Vlas Vegas records (galatasaray, hitch,....) released the long awaited debut album "The postman is a girl". Following the release, "over exposed frozen stars"(the single) was featured in "Arriba!", a hitlist compiled by the music journalists of "Studio Brussels (Belgian national Radio)" for 7 weeks!

The good promotion of Ansatz der maschine's official debut-cd resulted in a lot of nice shows like playing the support of "Do make say think ",”The Album Leaf” ," Bonobo ", "Hanne Hukelbergh" ,"The go find”, “Mono” , “Eels”,…

In clubs like: AB (Brussels, Be), t’Paard (the hague, Nl), 013 (Tilburg, Nl), W2 (denbosch, Nl), Le grand mix (Lille, Fr), 4 AD (diksmuide, Be), CACTUSClub (Brugge, Be), STUK (Leuven, Be), Mochvarra (Zagreb, Hr),….

Time to get them on our couch for an in-depth interview !

Mathijs, pick a song that describes your band best.
Definitely “Kohn Denny”. It’s the last track on our second album. It’s a musical flirt about the feeling of death. It can be sweet and terrible at the same time. The song carries the name of a young Jewish boy that died in a concentration camp in the Czech Republic (thersiannstadt)

What's your most treasured possession?
My Van, she’s called Vanessa, I bought her second hand from an electricity company and turned it into a camper. She’s already old and slow, but we had a lot of rock & roll experiences together.

What's your earliest memory?
Being locked in the trunk of the car while playing a game with my sister

What's your biggest fear?
Wasps!!!

What makes you completely happy?
Walking, going into nature, into the wild, camping

What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your band?
“On this lazy Sunday, few bands are as welcome as Ansatz der Maschine. Atmospheric and compelling, numbing and overwhelming,…. In fact, there are not enough superlatives to describe this band.” (Review by VPRO/3voor12 after our show in Tilmburg in sept 2007).

What’s your all-time favorite gig (as a visitor)?
This must be the gig of Hanne Hukkelberg in the AB club, 3 May 2007

What’s your all-time favorite gig (with the band)?
Playing in le Grand Mix in Tourcoing (Fr), this club has an amazing sound!! And also playing at the Gentse Feesten this summer, the tent was packed.

Who's your all-time hero?
Johann Sebastian Bach and Bogdan Raczinsky

Tell us about your favorite myspace-discovery!
The english band Polichinelle (www.myspace.com/polichinellle) it’s one of the new projects of Bloem de Ligny, a dutch singer who had a solo-project some years ago. I really love her voice and the music they’re making is totally weird and stressed but I like it!!

What's your one-liner?
Life is an orange, you just have to find the mute-button.

On the couch! with Dj Prinz | Push It

A colourful and enigmatic figure in Antwerp nightlife, DJ Prinz certainly outgrew the borders of his hometown and his country Belgium. His infectiously good vibes and his relentlessly good taste in club music has put every dancefloor around the globe into a frenzy. More than anyone else of his peers he knows how to radiate a smile of recognition on a connoisseur’s face each time he juggles that perfect mix out of his inseparable turntables.

Either on his multiple trips to Moscow or Ibiza, his remarkable sets at major festivals like Dance Valley or Tomorrowland , as the odd man out in dance music, DJ Prinz knows how to combine and crossbreed several genres in a tasteful manner, keeping his music elusive yet organic. Although securing a top position, time after time, in the annual ‘House DJ Of The Year’ polls, DJ Prinz is so much more.

Producer of his own music on Punk’Id Records, Robotronic Recordings, ... organisor and instigator of his own party concepts Free Vibes and Push It, but on top of all that, being called the marathon man amongst deejays. Just ask him why he loves playing those long sets and you’ll get an honest but firm answer, ‘Because I love what I’m doing!’.

Even in his "party-rush", DJ Prinz found the time to answer some questions we needed some answers on. Read all about it :

On the couch! with Pieter Van Dessel | Marble Sounds

At the helm of Marble Sounds is Pieter Van Dessel, who is also part half of the electro band Plastic Operator. His first offering under the moniker Marble Sounds came about in 2007, while residing in Montreal, Canada. That four song EP, "A Painting Or A Spill", tuned into the unabashed nostalgia of bands like Pinback, The Notwist and Eels, layering beauty on top bitter-sweet sentiment. The track 'Redesign' received considerable air play on Belgian national radio (Radio 1, StuBru) and was picked up by the BBC DJ Steve Lamacq.

Back in Belgium, Van Dessel put together a band consisting of Gianni Marzo (Isbells), Frederik Bastiaensen (ex-General Mindy), Christophe Vandewoude and Johan De Coster (Soon). In a matter of weeks, Marble Sounds was opening for bands such as Why?, Micah P. Hinson, HRSTA and Keith Caputo (Life of Agony). The band also contributed the opening track to Chapter Music's tribute to Kath Bloom alongside such musical beau monde as Devendra Banhart, The Dodos, Bill Callahan and Mark Kozelek.

Marble Sounds will present their first full-length CD (Zealrecords) at TRIX on the 17th of March. The album features vocals by Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices) and a song co-written with Tokyo singersongwriter Miwako Shimizu. Focus Knack has recently called Marble Sounds one of three most promising acts for 2010.

This calls for some deeper investigation in the psyche of Marble Sounds' founder Pieter Van Dessel. Here are some questions we wanted to get answers on. Enjoy !

Pick a song that describes your band best.
That must be "The Time To Sleep", which opens our debut album because it's a good introduction to our music. It has sweet sounds, a tuneful chorus and a big finale. Of course not all our songs have the same three ingredients, but those are elements that come back during the album pretty often.

What's your most treasured possession?
My father's guitar that i have with me since i started playing when I was a teenager. It's an old (and odd) folk guitar that I play with nylon strings.

What's your earliest memory?
Walking with my fiancee (at the time) on the playground when i was 5.

What's your biggest fear?
i have vertigo. And in most of my nightmares I'm driving without brakes. Not sure why...

What makes you completely happy?
Good food. It doesn't have to be a restaurant from the Michelin guide. It could be a good steak with bearnaise, chicken tikka masala on Brick Lane, Thai food from around the corner. Thanks for asking, now I realize happiness is never far away.

What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your band?
It's hard to make a chart of 'nicest compliments'. Every compliment feels as great as the one before. Yesterday we had a rehearsal with a trumpet player who heard us live for the first time. He knew the recorded versions - and most of them have a lot of layers - and he wondered how we could bring those songs with only 5 people. He was pleasantly surprised at the rehearsal, so that was cool to see.

What’s your all-time favorite gig (as a visitor)?
Radiohead at Vorst Nationaal, when they were touring after "Hail To The Thief". And I love that album too. When "In Rainbows" came out, people started bashing that album, and I don't know why.

What’s your all-time favorite gig (with the band)?
Our show at STUK in Leuven, as the support act of Micah P. Hinson. We played well and there was a kind audience and a good sound engineer.

Who's your all-time hero?
Tough question. I'd say Michael J. Fox because 'Back To The Future' is the best trilogy ever. And with the DeLorean Time Machine he's an "all-time hero" in a literal sense.

Tell us about your favorite myspace-discovery
Amatorski is a Belgian band I discovered on myspace a while ago and it was love at first sight. They make atmospheric songs with a romantic and vintage vibe. They're in the semi-finals of Humo's Rock Rally at the moment. I'm sure they'll get the exposure they deserve. We've asked them to do the support at our release show at Trix the 17th of March and we are delighted they said yes.
